Driven by the kind Tetyana’s comments, that I totally agree on ("in the attached paper, both of the pf struts are still shown to be in the same plane, quite posterior, while the structure you talking about has a distinct anterior inferior course.") I went deep down in the literature and found another paper with a different explanation of this anatomic structure: Instead of two struts or bands (anterior and posterior) of the popliteofibular lig. what we see in cases like that is an anatomic variation of the distal insertion of the popliteofibular lig. at the anterior slope of the fibular head.
Now there are two theories to explain this anatomic finding… I kinda like the second more.
Here is the link of the paper… It is in the SCIELO database and not in PUBMED and this could preclude some of us (including me) of finding this paper before.

I know the button line… Is it going to change the way the orthopedic surgeon will treat the patient? Probably not, but now we can better explain some structures that we didn’t know how to deal with when analysing the MRI of the knee.

I’d like to share some images of what I think is the anterior division of the popliteofibular ligament. Probably most of you have seen this structure before.
It has been described in the orthopedic literature (paper attached), but it is not documented with images in the radiologic literature (as far as I know). Every imaging paper dealing with the popliteofibular ligament seems to focus on the posterior division.
What do you think? Any thoughts are welcome.All the best,
