My good friend and long time colleague Simon Blease, who practices in London, recently asked me if I have ever seen or injected a patient with superomedial scapular impingement syndrome. I told him I had never heard of it. He told me he had gathered together his experience (which is considerable) and had written a nice blurb on the subject. I said, let me send it to OCAD and let’s see what other people’s experiences may be out there.
He not only prepared something but did an outstanding job on it!
Hi Phillip
We have had quite a few referrals from certain of our shoulder surgeons and sports docs during the past 4 years or so.
MRI seems reasonably sensitive at demonstrating the oedema superomedially when clinical suspicion
We inject the bursa under US or CT with good results
Need to be careful re pneumothorax risk
Us is fine and safe if in prone position on table with arms hanging down towards floor to rotate scapula laterally
With US can localize foci of tenderness/pain
CT guided injection more difficult position wise as scapulae in more medial position
This and AC joint injection have exploded in our part of the world. Not sure what your experience has been re AC jt injections
