Hi all,
I also do breast imaging in addition to MSK and Covid vaccination has
caused extensive and significant ipsilateral lymphadenopathy. The
lymphadenopathy is more prominent with the Moderna than the Pfizer
vaccine. I biopsied a couple of the enlarged nodes on the very first
patient who presented to our diagnostic breast clinic with lymphadenopathy
on ultrasound, and her mammogram looked like inflammatory breast cancer.
Now we know better.
The current recommendation from breast imaging is to follow these nodes in
3 months with an ultrasound. Other recommendations include waiting for 10
weeks after the first vaccine dose and 6 weeks after the second vaccine
dose before obtaining a screening mammogram.
We now have a question on our screening mammogram questionnaire about their
Covid vaccination status.
So, for this particular patient, ask about ipsilateral Covid vaccination
and follow-up with ultrasound in 3 months.
Often, the patients will tell you that their “swollen lymph nodes” have
resolved by the time we see them for the three month follow-ups.
Hope that helps,
Thao Wagner
