Hi Phillip!
Hope all is well! Our group reported a case of SIRVA following Covid
vaccination in Skeletal Radiology a few months ago. The case is about a 61
yo woman presenting with excruciating pain in her shoulder within 30 min
after receiving her first shot of COVID-19 vaccine. The injection was
administered “too high” in the arm and confirmation of the incorrect
technique was obtained by photographs of the patient while receiving the
vaccine. I am attaching the paper here below (images of the paper were
taken 2 months after the onset of symptoms) and the follow up images (7
months after the shot) that I have shared in my Instagram and Twitter
accounts – feel free to share with the OCAD community if you want. Although
the patient feels better now after having been treated with a course of
oral prednisone and a physical therapy regimen, she still reports pain and
impaired mobility of her shoulder.
Note: I love art and I like to correlate radiology images with art pieces
and share them along with the educational content of the case. In this
specific case, the bright liquid and the greyish synovial hypertrophy in
SAD bursitis on anterior FS DP coronal image reminds me of Medusa, created
by Caravaggio in 1597. The artwork depicts the exact moment when Medusa was
executed by Perseus. The artist replaces Medusa’s face with his own, as an
indication of his immunity to her dreadful gaze.
Best wishes!!
